It Takes a Village to Raise A Child

When I think about child development I think about the statement “It takes a village to raise a child”.  From my studies and from my own experiences raising a child I know that influences on child development extend past the home.  Schools, communities and even the world influences how a child develops.

Song sung by choir and lyrics address how villages must share the burden of raising and child and how all children are shared in a village.

Hillary Clinton talks about how it still takes a village and country to raise a family.

Michael Caito discusses how it takes communal effort to raise a child beyond the immediate family as well as supporting the adults in each family.  Do you have a village to support you as a parent and an adult?

Jamie talks about how her friends positively influence her children and how she loves her friends even more because of it.

Poem about how even people whose names you do not know have a stake in raising your child because of their great hearts and attachment to community and family.

These poems, videos, writings and lecture talk about how “It takes a village” to support and raise your child as well as support you through the process. I am a single mother and I know that I would not be surviving this journey without the support, opportunities, grace and love my family and community has given me in raising Luke. Without them what kind of child would he be today?  I often wonder that!

  1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree with the statement "It takes a Village," so much so I used it in my welcoming letter for my classroom the last few years. I believe children can learn more when parents, teachers and others in the community work together in supporting their development.
